Skomer’s most famous attraction is the Puffin population – approximately 40,000 of these charismatic seabirds return to their burrows on Skomer to breed every year. This species is currently listed as Vulnerable on the global IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, but the population on Skomer Island is one of very few which has seen an increase in numbers, despite the challenges of climate change. On WTSWW’s Skomer there are no ground predators which may be a contributing factor to the success of the puffin population, but also allows visitors to Skomer to have a unique wildlife experience due to the fearless nature of the puffins.
There is so much to this National Nature Reserve - visitors will often see Atlantic grey seals hauled out on the rocks beneath the island, or dolphins leaping through the rich waters which surround this idyllic haven. The Manx shearwaters which return year-on-year make up around half of the world’s population and are also a sight to behold. WTSWW’s Skomer Island really has something for every wildlife enthusiast.
Lisa Morgan, Head of Islands and Marine at WTSWW, said… “We are excited to be able open on-line bookings for Skomer 2023. A day trip to Skomer is such a special experience. The combination of the boat trip, the island landscape and an abundance of seabirds, seals, and other wildlife make it top of many people’s wish list. Numbers are limited each day to protect the fragile island habitat and ensure everyone has a great time, so be sure to book early to avoid disappointment. Wildlife Trust staff at Lockley Lodge and on Skomer look forward to welcoming you all from 1 April.”
WTSWW have partnered with local, family-run business, Dale Sailing, to provide transport to and from Skomer. Dale Sailing are the only boat trip operator which is licensed to land tourists on Skomer, and has exclusive access to the island.
Gareth Reynolds from Dale Sailing said… “Following a fantastic 2022 season, our team here at Pembrokeshire Islands Boat Trips are thrilled to be already looking to the 2023 season ahead! The 2022 season has been a huge milestone for us. Our continued partnership with our friends at WTSWW, along with the introduction of new vessels, new staff, and new infrastructure made for a greatly enhanced visitor experience. We can't wait to build on this in 2023, and really look forward to welcoming you all very soon!”
Book from 12am on the 1st of December for your 2023 Skomer Island adventure. WTSWW members enjoy complimentary boat landings.
