About the event

This event has been organised by the WTSWW's Swansea group as part of Swansea’s City Nature Challenge 2025.

The aim is to discover and record as many species as we can - and have fun learning a lot along the way!

We'll be recording species found using the iNaturalist app, so upload the app and bring your mobile phone if you have one - or the leaders will record your finds for you.

Gelli-Hir wood includes ancient woodland and a pond and is home to many breeding birds including owls and sparrowhawks. Several species of butterfly are found there and the fallen timber is important for invertebrates, mosses, lichen and fungi, so there's lots to see.

Steve, who is leading the walk, has worked for Buglife Cymru for more than two years and is a Project Officer for Natur am Byth in Swansea focussing on the Gower Commons species including the Southern Damselfly and Six-spotted Cranefly. He also surveys the enigmatic Fen raft spider elsewhere in Swansea.

There’ll be a break during the event so please bring your own drinks and lunch. Car sharing is encouraged as parking is limited. Please dress according to the weather forecast for the day.
