Weekly volunteers on Skomer play an important part in visitor management and engagement, from the moment day visitors step ashore to the moment that they leave. They also get stuck into the daily cleaning of the hostel and the compost toilets.
On days when visitor boats aren’t running, volunteers carry out a variety of island maintenance tasks – this could include anything from painting to scything. If the weather is kind, there may also be the opportunity to get involved in monitoring – usually reptile transects and cetacean surveys.
There is a volunteer fee of £35 for the week to cover costs, however this is only for those who can afford to pay it and can be covered by the Skalmey Bursary.
Please note that volunteering for Skomer is always very oversubscribed – last year we had three times as many applicants as places – so please don’t be disappointed if we can’t find a place for you this year. The greater your availability, the greater your chance of a volunteering slot.
We aim to get back to all applicants in November. In the meantime, if you have any questions, please first check out the current Volunteer Welcome Pack (below).
