Treeific News for Drostre and Craig Y Rhiwarth!

Some little trees were acquired from Stump Up for Trees the woodland creation organisation .  These were used to gap up the newly laid hedgerow at Penywaun.  Trees were also planted at Drostre Wood roadside and Glasbury Cutting where ash trees had been felled.  Five oak trees were planted to replace a veteran ash tree that fell over last autumn at Craig Y Rhiwarth on the boundary with the bridleway.

At Vicarage, Nr Abergwesyn we continued annual scrub clearance in the wildflower rich meadow using our tree poppers, we also welcomed a new volunteer.

A Boost for Marsh Fritillary Butterflies

The Local Places for Nature, Ystradgynlais project has continued with volunteers helping to plant some 350 devil’s-bit scabious plug plants in areas with few or none.  This will boost the availability of this food-plant for the Marsh Fritillary Butterfly.  Together with our scrub management and tree thinning we will hopefully encourage populations to spread around the nature reserve more.

Contractors also have completed a new gate and cattle pen which will facilitate management of the land by grazing animals.  

New Bird Boxes from Barry Hill

We have also replaced some old bird boxes in the reserves where bird monitoring takes place.  We recently received some boxes made by Barry Hill and also from the Powys Local Nature Partnership some novel boxes from Griffiths Civil Engineering which were made from drainage pipe off cuts and some bat boxes for Glasbury Cutting.
