July-August 2023 Brecknock Update
We are very excited to have now recorded Lunar Hornet Clearwing moths at both Vicarage Meadows and Cae Pwll y Bo.
At Cae Pwll y Bo we have moved the reserve signboard so that people can read it without standing near the globeflowers. The other wildflowers are looking good too!
July and August have involved a lot of work on bracken and balsam. Tara Daniels is now working part time in the Brecknock area and with her help we have made a better dent in the Himalayan Balsam at Ystrad Fawr this year.
This has involved strimming the dense areas and hand pulling the scattered plants. Although we don’t get many volunteers for the work parties we are helped by locals pulling the plants as they pass through.
The Bracken has been particularly dense and tall this year particularly at Cae Eglwys so it has been hard work for the volunteers during this summer period.
You may notice that we have not visited Wern Plemys and Cae Lyndon at all this year.
This is because the lease ran out on Wern Plemys and we found that there was no signed lease for Cae Lyndon.
Both sites were put to the Conservation Committee for reserve acquisition approval and were passed.
We are now in the process of renewing Wern Plemys lease but are asking for the access rights (along the cycle track) to be written in to the agreement.
We hope to get back on Wern Plemys and Cae Lyndon as soon as possible!
